Abstract
1,250,595. Infra-red burner. I. PELLIZZETTI. 12 Feb., 1970 [18 Feb., 1969], No. 6875/70. Heading F4T. In an infra-red radiant burner for vaporized liquid fuel, combustion takes place on a perforated heat resistant panel 1 forming one wall of a mixing chamber 3, which is supplied with air and fuel vapour through a venturi tube 4, the fuel vapour emerging from nozzle 11 after being produced from liquid fuel in a vaporizer body 5 which is mounted adjacent to the panel 1. The vaporizer consists of a vaporizing chamber 6 which is supplied with liquid fuel via a conduit 77 and from which fuel vapour passes to the nozzle 11 which is formed from a tube 12 on which a sleeve 15 is a sliding fit. A needle 13 is formed at the end of tube 12 which has holes 14 to allow fuel vapour to pass to the inside of sleeve 15 and through the hole 17 which is adapted to receive needle 13. Bellows 18, preferably of metal, sealingly connect and bias apart flanges 12a and 16 formed on tube 12 and sleeve 15 respectively. A lever 19 is adapted to transmit manual movement of a rod 24 to the sleeve 15, such movement being usable to provide fine adjustment of the rate of supply of fuel vapour to the burner, to close down the supply of fuel completely or to clean the hole 17 with the needle 13 and, by causing a pressure rise in the chamber 6, remove impurities by forcing the liquid fuel to flow back through the supply conduit. An electric resistor 29 is provided to enable vaporization of liquid fuel to occur when starting from cold and the portion 29a provides ignition. A thermostat (not shown) cuts off the electric supply to resistor 29 after ignition is established. A thermostat 30 is coupled to an electromechanical valve 31. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), a bimetal strip is used to provide automatic control of the nozzle 11 in place of the manual control afforded by rod 24 and lever 19. In another embodiment (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), the mixing chamber is cylindrical and is formed within a cylindrical perforated heat resistant panel.
