Abstract

1,250,164. Lighters. TETRA MOLECTRIC Ltd. 13 March, 1969 [26 March, 1968], No. 14552/68. Heading F4F. [Also in Division H2] To maximize the length of stroke of a spring- loaded hammer 29 striking a piezo-electric element 11 to produce an ignition spark in a gasburning cigarette lighter, the hammer and a manually moved actuating member 5, by which the hammer is cocked and released, both move partially outside the confines of the lighter body as defined when in the rest position. Downward and rearward movement of the actuating member 5 pushes back the hammer 29, by means of a notch 35 in a web 15 and a pin 31, compressing spring 34. A valve supplying gas to nozzle 8 is opened by the action of nose 25 of web 15 on a lever 26. Further movement of the actuating member causes notch 35 to ride over pin 34 against the pull of spring 22, releasing the hammer to strike the element 11 and thus producing an ignition spark between an electrode 12 and the nozzle 8. In a second embodiment (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown), the piezo-electric element and electrode are housed within the actuating member, the hammer being in the region of the nozzle until it is released to strike the element. Thus wastage of space within the closed lighter is minimized.
