Abstract

1,250,029. Organic photo-conductor. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 14 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 8206/69. Heading H1K. An organic photo-conductor is spectrally sensitized by a cyanine due comprising a pyrrole nucleus joined to the methine linkage by the 2-carbon atom thereof and a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus joined by a carbon atom thereof to the methine linkage. The dye preferably has the formula wherein n=0 or 1; L=CH, C(CH 3 ) or C(C 6 H 5 ); R 1 = substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl; R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 6 =H, alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl; X=Cl, Br, I, ClO 4 , CNS, sulphamate, p-toluene sulphonate or methyl sulphate and Z represents the atoms necessary to give a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus. In the specific embodiments, an electrophotographic plate is made by coating an aluminium plate with a mixture of a polyester, a photo-conductor and a dye of the above formula. Many examples of suitable dyes, photoconductors and binders are given.
