Abstract

1,249,530. Fluid-pressure brakes. CERTAINTEED PRODUCTS CORP. 30 May, 1969 [9 Dec., 1968], No. 27577/69. Heading F2F. A brake actuator having an emergency brake applying device in which a spring is air-assisted comprises a pressure chamber divided into two compartments 23, 49 by a piston 24, an air input opening 21 and a port 50 passing through the piston to connect the compartments and containing a check-valve 52, a spring 32 being located above piston 24. Air entering compartment 23 moves piston 24 to compress the spring 32 and in these conditions the service brake works in the normal manner under the influence of air pressure in a chamber 47 acting on a flexible diaphragm 39 against a spring 44 to move a push-rod 43 and apply the brake. When air is released from chamber 23 an unbalanced pressure exists with respect to piston 24 and the pressure of air in compartment 49 assists spring 32 to act on a push-rod 30 and hence on diaphragm 39 and a pad 42 to move thrust-rod 43. Check valve 52 opens inwardly into chamber and controls the flow of air from compartment 49 to compartment 23 so that the force is great at first and then gradually diminishes as the vehicle speed decreases. Compartment 49 is charged with air from compartment 23 via an inlet valve 54 which opens at a predetermined pressure.
