Abstract

[Also in Division G3] Apparatus for linking a data processing unit with a condition to be controlled, includes means for converting an input signal indicating the status of the condition to a data signal, and for transmitting the data signal to the data processing unit, and for receiving and storing an information signal from the latter and generating a control signal in response to it, means for generating an independent back-up signal, means for comparing the back-up and control signals, means for adjusting the back-up signal to enable transfers between back-up and control signals without substantially disturbing the condition being controlled, and means for selecting one of these two signals to control the condition. A digital computer, controlling a process in accordance with a programme, receives the outputs of thermocouples, selected by a multiplexer, amplified, and digitized in an analogueto-digital converter, and produces digital control signals which are converted to analogue form in a first digital to analogue converter and if the converter output, amplified and stored, agrees with the converter input, the converter output is passed by the multiplexer to a selected capacitor store. If they do not agree, a second digital to analogue converter is switched in as a replacement (this also has similar checking arrangements), or a lamp may be lit to warn the operator to switch in the replacement. The outputs of the two digital to analogue converters can also be compared as a check. Each capacitor store can control a respective valve positioner via a field-effect transistor and a 4-position multi-bank switch. This switch selects either the capacitor or a back-up signal generator (comprising a potentiometer and a transistor) to control the valve positioner, and also either of them to feed a meter to indicate the control signal magnitude. A lamp is lit when the backup signal generator is in control of the valve positioner.
