Abstract

1,248,734. Valves. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 57831/67. Heading F2V. A valve comprises a butterfly closure 3 having a resilient sealing member 29 having a crosssection formed with a rectangular base, located in a mating groove in the closure, and an outwardly projecting portion, e.g. of trapezuim section, to close against a seat intermediate portions 31, 32. The seat has an axial extent of substantially twice that of the sealing face 30 of the member 29. The valve body is formed by an annular portion 2 which fits between pipe sections 1 and la and is sealed by rings 20, 21 and compression rings 24, 25 pulled up by bolts 26. The closure 3 is rotated by a spindle 5, having a winged member 7 clamped thereto and cooperating with stops (10), Fig. 2, not shown, on the body 2. In Fig. 4, not shown, a cover 8<SP>1</SP> is fitted over the spindle to exclude dirt therefrom, the cross-sectional area of the flow-passage through the annular portion (2<SP>1</SP>) is increased over that of the pipes 1, la by an amount equal to the obstructing cross-section of the butterfly closure when open, and the annular body (2<SP>1</SP>) does not overlap the pipes 1, la so that the valve can be inserted into an insitupipe. The ends of the pipes can be chamfered. The mating faces of the sealing member and the seat can be part-spherical.
