Abstract

1,248,728. 728. Driving pumps. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. May 28, 1970 [June 18, 1969, June 27, 1969], No.25772/70. Heading F1C. [Also in Division F2] A liquid-cooled disc brake assembly (see Division F2) includes a single-cusp pump impeller 76 splined to a wheel hub 20 to the right of brake discs 70, and rotating in a toroidal pump chamber 78. Cooling liquid is discharged through pump outlet pressure passage 82 to a brake inlet chamber 84 surrounding the disc pack, and is forced inwards to a coaxial brake outlet chamber 80. An extra stationary disc 74, extending further inwards than stationary brake discs 72, adjacent impeller 76, prevents the flow from by-passing the disc pack. From chamber 80 liquid flows axially along cooling-liquid outlet passages 88 (the gaps between the pump splines) to a further annular chamber 90. External circuit.-The cooling liquid is conducted from annular chamber 90 along an outlet line 94, Fig. 5, to a pipe passing through the vehicle radiator, and thence preferably to the pump inlet line of a similarly-constructed brake assembly in a wheel on the opposite side of the vehicle Fig. 6 (not shown). The cooling liquid returns via the radiator to the pump inlet, which communicates with the chamber 78.
