Abstract
778,557. Motor vehicles. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 29, 1956 [April 28, 1955], No. 9795/56. Class 79(3). [Also in Group XXXIV] A liquid cooled friction brake for motor vehicles includes, in each wheel axle mounting assembly, engageable stationary and rotatable brake members 62, 63, through which a cooling liquid is circulated by a pump, Fig. 5, the pump being operated only when the brake is applied by the frictional clamping of disc member 100 against the annular wall 70 so that by rotation of the pump rotor 75 cooling fluid is forced by the valve out through ports 90 and 91 and past the interengaging friction members. The liquid thus passes through slots in the wall 70 into the annular space 61 and thence by the discharge passage 99 to the conduit 16. Cooling fluid is supplied to the brake through conduit 22 from a header tank on the vehicle supplying the pumps on all four wheels, the return flow conduits including a heat exchanger, which as shown in Fig. 12, may be disposed in the lower collecting chamber of the conventional engine radiator 20, the conduit 123 leading from a master cylinder or other actuator unit to a pair of piston and cylinder units by which the interengaging friction plates are forced together.
