Abstract

1,248,566. Halography. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 10 Oct., 1969 [30 Oct., 1968; 17 Jan., 1969], Nos. 51350/67 and 51540/68. Heading C4S. [Also in Division G2] Holographic camera apparatus comprises within a housing 11, a laser 10, a shutter 12, a beam splitter 13, to form an object beam 15 and a reference beam 14, an object 16 and a photographic plate 19 to receive both object and reference beams, a narrow band filter, having a band width equal to that from laser 10, being positioned over the photographic medium. The narrow band filter prevents clogging of the photographic medium by extraneous light. The reference beam 14 passes a density filter and then is reflected by a series of opposed prisms 20, 21. The prisms 21 are mounted for movement toward or away from prism 20 to give an adjustable path length for the reference beam. The photographic film 30, Fig. 2 (not shown), which may be a slide or reel for other medium such as photochromic glass) is held in a frame and underlies the narrow band filter (34). A secondary shutter (36) synchronized with shutter 12 is also located in front of filter 34. When the blind is in position a trip switch 38 actuates the primary shutter 12. To record holograms of larger objects the two adjacent sides of the housing which normally enclose an object 16 are opened outwardly and mirror 16 adjusted accordingly. To compensate for the increased object path length prisms 21 are moved away from prisms 20 to increase the reference beam path length. By pulsing the laser 10 multiple exposure can be made. In this case either the photographic film can be moved or the angle of the reference beam changed for each exposure. The pulsed exposure has particular application in studying stress patterns and vibrating objects. To ensure that the illumination from both the reference and object beams is equal, a photo-cell or grease-spot device 26 is incorporated with the film holder to control the light from the two beams.
