Abstract

1,248,546. Chimneys; waste gas disposal. KAISER INDUSTRIES CORP. 2 Feb., 1970, No. 4884/70. Headings F4J and F4X. Gases issuing from an exhaust opening 22 in the cover 18 of an electric arc furnace are conducted to the inlet 28 of a gas cleaning system by a duct 180 which is movably rectilinearly on a carriage 140 and tiltable in bearings 70 to vary the gap 210 between the duct front end 182 and the opening 22. The carriage 140 is movable between limit switches 170, 172 by the piston rod 166 of a pneumatic motor 162 acting on a rear bracket 160. Its wheels 150, 152 run on trackways 76, 78 in the tiltable frame 60. Wheels 152 being grooved and running between rails 80, 82. The frame 60, which incorporates side members 66 connected by U-shaped girders 72, has trunnions 68 in the bearings 70 and is tilted by an electric motor 116 driving worm gear jacks 100 through a shaft 118. Said frame 60 will move between limit switches 126 and 128 which may also prevent the furnace power being turned on or off. Similarly, when forward limit switch 170 is engaged, roof movements and full tilting of the furnace are prevented whereas when rear limit switch 172 is engaged, roof movements and full tilting of the furnace are enabled and furnace power is cut off.
