Abstract

[Also in Divisions F2 and H2] An electric motor wheel for an industrial truck comprises a fixed casing 4 divided by an annular partition 3 into two chambers 18, 19 containing an electrically-conducting liquid, pole coils 10, 11 on polepieces 12, 13 attached to the casing 4 in each chamber 18, 19, rotor discs 1, 2 mounted one in each chamber 18, 19 and electrically connected on an insulating sleeve carried by a hollow shaft 5 which drives the wheel through two-speed planetary reduction gearing, and a brake applied automatically when the motor is inoperative. A shaft 6 splined to the hollow shaft 5 and axially displaceable by means of a rod 26 carries two pinions a 1 , a 2 selectively engageable with respective pinions g, f of a planet cluster mounted on a shaft 7 in a carrier H. The planet pinions f, g are in respective mesh with an annular gear B fixed to the casing 4 and with an annular gear e attached to a rotary cover 8 carrying a ground wheel 24. A disc 14 carrying a friction lining is connected by pins 15 to one polepiece 13 and urged by springs 16 into axial engagement with a brake disc 17 on the shaft 5. When the motor is operating the disc 14 is attracted magnetically to the polepiece 13 to release the brake but when the current is cut off the disc 14 engages the disc 17 to prevent rotation of the wheel 24.
