Abstract
1,248,389. Variable resistor. STACKPOLE CARBON CO. 24 July, 1970, No. 36067/70. Heading H1S. A linear variable resistor (Fig. 3 and Fig. 1) comprises a moulded plastics rectangular case 1 with a longitudinal slot 9, collector and resistor elements 2, 3 and a slider 8, mounted by grooves 10 slidably in the slot 9, carrying a bridging contact 7 and having a passage 12 extending towards the slot which carries a rotatable shaft 13 the conical end surface of which bears along one side of the slot only, the passage being off central with respect to the width of the case. A leaf spring clip 16 retains the shaft in contact with the slot and a knob 21 is provided so that the shaft may be rotated, to drive the slider unit by friction drive along the groove. A notch 14 is provided on the slide to prevent it interfering with the cone. A second embodiment (Fig. 4) has a central shaft 35 with a head 36 (Fig. 6) which engages one side of the slot 29, a longitudinal groove 42 being provided on the other side. A slidable collar unit 37, 38, Fig. 6, and a spring 39, Fig. 6, in the circular recess 40 bias the head 36 in contact with the slot. Rotation of the shaft by the knob 41 causes the slider to be driven by friction drive along the slot. Fig. 8 (not shown) describes an embodiment as above but the head and smaller collar portions are conical.
