Abstract
1,248,337. Electrostatic flocking. INDEV Inc. 22 Oct., 1969 [28 Oct., 1968], No. 51870/ 69. Heading D1L. Flock is applied to a web 17 having an adhesive coating thereon from a cyclone 12 and distributor 14 during passage beneath electrostatic grid elements 40, each consisting of a rectangular high voltage metal pan having a plane surface 47 and curved lip 48, the pan being supported at the base of a housing of isosceles triangular cross-section and having a lower part 58 of acrylic resin and an upper part 56 of p.v.c. connected to the lower part by nylon screws 62. A conductive adhesive material (e.g. a water based acrylic) may be earthed via a doctor blade smoothing the adhesive onto the web 17, alternatively earthed grid elements may be provided beneath said web. Preferably, the upper part of the housing is of 1/16 inch thick p.v.c. and the lower part of 1/8 inch thick acrylic resin having dielectric ratings of 350 volts/nil and 400 volts/nil respectively, the housing having equal base angles of 65‹ and the pan being at about 40,000 volts. Adjustable nylon stops project through wooden end pieces (70 and 71, Fig. 2) of the housing and abut the pan. The housing is suspended by nylon hangers 42. The web passes over a fixed, rubberised blanket 31 vibrated by rotary heater bars 20. A collector hopper 26 and suction nozzle 28 return excess flocks to a return cyclone 30.
