Abstract

124,760. General Chemical Co., (Assignees of Jahn, F. W. de). Nov. 3, 1917, [Convention date]. Catalytic apparatus; hydrogen from mixtures of steam with carbon monoxide, catalytic production of.-Carbon monoxide contained in gas mixtures, such as the mixture of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen produced according to Specification 120,546, is converted into hydrogen and carbonic acid by mixing the gases with steam and treating the heated mixture with a catalyst such as iron oxide. The catalyst is contained in a chamber 39 and is disposed on a grate 40. Above the catalyst are arranged perforated plates 41 to distribute the gases. To avoid leakage, the chamber 39 is supported on legs 58 provided with rounded steel insertions 60, Fig. 3, resting on steel surfaces 61 to allow freedom of motion. To start the operation, a producer-gas flame is employed in a chamber 54, which heats the gases to a sufficient temperature and is then shut off. A series of heatexchangers 47 is employed in association with the catalytic chamber 39, the course of the gases being as shown by the arrows, Fig. 1. Steam is supplied by a pipe 48. If the temperature of the chamber 39 falls too low, as indicated by a pyrometer 42, the necessary heat is supplied by the burner 54. Alternatively, the heat-regulation may be effected by electrically-heated coils or other means.
