Abstract
1,247,569. Wheels for railway vehicles. INSTITUT CHERNOI METALLURGII. 18 Dec., 1969, No. 61807/69. Heading B7C. [Also in Division C7] Railway wheels are heated to hardening temperature and then rotated in a vertical plane while being quenched by jets of fluid; the latter is supplied simultaneously to the rim, the disc and the zone of transition from the disc to the hub, but the pressure and duration of the flow to the rim differ from that to the other parts. Preferably the rim is quenched for 120-200 seconds using a pressure of 2-5 atmospheres, while the disc and transition zone are quenched for 50 to 120 seconds at 1-3 atmospheres. Quenching may be effected by spray chambers located adjacent to the sides and periphery of the wheel, the chambers being divided internally to produce independent cooling of the rim.
