Abstract

1,247,251. Polymerization. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K.K. 6 Jan., 1969 [10 Jan., 1968], No. 811/69. Headings C3G and C3P. [Also in Division G2] Polymeric images are formed by developing an image-wise exposed photographic silver halide emulsion having a photographic latent image, in the presence of water and of at least one normally solid or liquid polymerizable vinyl compound containing the group H 2 C=CH-, or being a vinylidene compound, an itaconate or maleate, with, as a reducing agent, at least one phenol as hereinafter specified or a sulphate salt thereof whereby said monomer is selectively polymerized at the portions of the emulsion layer bearing the latent image, the phenol having the general formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 satisfy one of the following conditions (a), (b) and (c); (a) R 1 represents a methyl group, a hydroxymethyl group, a dialkylaminomethyl group, a homomethyl group, a carboxymethyl group, a carboxyl group or an acyl group; R 2 and R 4 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group; R 3 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or a halogen atom; and R 5 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a hydroxymethyl group or a halogen atom; or R 4 and R 5 may, together with the benzene nucleus of the phenol, form a naphthalene ring by ring closure; (b) R 1 and R 5 each represents a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; R 2 and R 4 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group; and R 3 represents an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, a substituted alkyl group or a halogen atom; R 2 and R 3 may form an alkylene ring by ring closure and R 3 may be an alkylene group which may be alkyl substituted and which bears a para-phenol group so as to form a bisphenol; and (c) R 1 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 each represents a hydrogen atom and R 2 represents a tertiary alkyl group. Various monomers are listed and include acrylonitrile, acrylamides, acrylates, vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl ethers, vinyl benzenes, vinylpyridines, 2 - methyl - N - vinylimidazole and vinyl carbazole, some of which have two vinyl groups. Many phenols of the formula given above are also listed. Both the vinyl compound and the phenol may be incorporated in the photographic emulsion before exposure, or one of them may be in the emulsion before exposure, the other being added in the treating solution to the system after exposure or both may be present in the treating solution. The polymerization is preferably carried out in the presence of sulphite ions. When the vinyl monomer is contained in the system from the first, it is incorporated in an amount by weight of from 1/30 to 30 times the amount of colloidal binder originally present in the system.
