Abstract

1,247,043. Hydrocarbon conversion catalysts. W. R. GRACE & CO. 17 Oct., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 49342/68. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C5] A catalyst comprises a low surface area refractory oxide matrix within which is dispersed a promoter consisting essentially of a faujasite crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having the formula: wherein M represents a hydrogen cation or a metal cation, for example a rare earth metal cation, n is the valence of the cation M, x has a value up to 9, y has a value of from 1.5 to 7.0, preferably of from 2.0 to 7.0, and z is zero or has a value up to 9, the catalyst having a surface area after calcination at 1000‹F for 3 hours, and before any steaming thereof, of less than 250 m<SP>2</SP>/g, preferably of from 150 to 250 m<SP>2</SP>/g. The refractory oxide matrix may consist of alumina, silica, silicamagnesia, silica-alumina, silica-zirconia, clay or a mixture thereof; a preferred matrix is a combination of silica-alumina and clay. The zeolite may be a natural zeolite, for example faujasite, erionite, chabazite, gmelinite or mordenite, or a synthetic zeolite, for example zeolite X or zeolite Y or zeolite L. Exemplified catalysts consist of, by weight, 33 (or 32) per cent clay, 45 (or 44) per cent silica, 15 per cent alumina and 7 (or 9) per cent rare earthexchanged zeolite X. The catalyst may be used in a process for treating, for example cracking, hydrocarbons; in such a process, the catalyst may be regenerated by a thermal treatment, for example by contact with a stream of oxidising gas, for example air, to remove coke therefrom and thereafter may be recycled for further use in the process.
