Abstract
1,246,958. 2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone; 2- hydroxy - 4 - alkoxybenzophenones. FURUKAWA DENKI KOGYO K.K. 29 Jan., 1970, No. 4292/70. Heading C2C. 2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone is prepared by reacting resorcinol with benzotrichloride at 10-90‹ C. in a mixed solvent comprising 20- 90% by weight of water and 10-80% by weight of water-miscible organic solvent. The preferred organic solvents are C 1 -C 4 alkanols, especially methanol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane and acetic, propionic and butyric acids. Preferably an emulsifier is present in the reaction mixture. The 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone so obtained may be converted to 2-hydroxy-4-alkoxybenzophenones by reacting with an alkyl halide or with an alkyl ester of benzene sulphonic or pmethyl benzene sulphonic acid in aqueous alkaline solution.
