A vehicle-mountable mower comprises rotatable cutting discs 6 whose operating areas overlap, mounted on forward projections 2 from a carrier beam 1 containing drive means for the cutters 6. Drive may be taken from a tractor, e.g. through cone belts, or hydraulic means, and a set of engaging vertically journalled drive gears 5 may transmit drive along the beam 1 to the cutting discs 6 and to a swath drum 16. The cutting discs 6 include centrifugal blades 9 held in circumferential slots (20), Figs. 5-7 (not shown), by pins 22 which are readily released against the action of a spring ring (29). The mower is suspended from a support frame 46 via a sub-frame 49. In the mowing position the beam 1 and a shoe 3 ride on the ground and a protective plate 67 overlies the cutters 6. Tension springs 54, 64 are taut and a hoisting cable 56 is loose. For raising the mower to a swath position to just clear lying crop the frame 46 is raised, the sub-frame 49 pivots downwardly at 48 until a stop 50 thereon contacts a crossbar 47, and the cable 56 becomes taut, raising the beam 1 by action on a lever 53 as the shoe 3 rises with the frame 49. To reach a transport position the frame 46 is lowered to the ground, releasing the tension in the spring 64, a supporting rocker arm 58 is turned manually 180‹ about its axis 59, effectively shortening the cable 56 in relation to the spring 64, and the frame 46 is raised until the shoe 3 and beam 1 clear the ground, whereupon the cutter bar is effectively balanced by the springs and can readily be turned to vertical.
