[Also in Divisions B2, C2 and C5] Textile materials are rendered oil and water repellent by treatment with chromium complexes of carboxylic acids having the formula (1), (CFR<SP>1</SP> 2 ) CF-O-CF 2 CF 2 -(CZ 2 CZ 2 ) m - -CX 2 CX<SP>1</SP> 2 ) n (CX 2 ) u COOH, wherein each R<SP>1</SP> is independently a fluorine or chlorine atom or a perfluoroalkyl group or two R<SP>1</SP> groups form a fluoroalkylene group, provided that not more than two R<SP>1</SP> groups are chlorine atoms and not more than one of the R<SP>1</SP> groups attached to the same carbon atom is a chlorine atom; each Z is independently a hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine atom, not more than two of them being chlorine; u is 0 or 1; each of m and n is from 0 to 75 with their sum (m+n) being up to 75; and each of X and X<SP>1</SP> is independently a hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine atom, provided that not more than one of X and X<SP>1</SP> is a chlorine atom and that when u is 1 and one of the group X<SP>1</SP> is a chlorine or fluorine atom the other X<SP>1</SP> group is a chlorine or fluorine atom. The complexes are obtained by reacting carboxylic acids of formula I with chromyle chloride. Specified materials are paper, cellulosic films, wood, leather, textile fibres, yarns and fabrics.
