A surface of an item of process equipment which is to be in contact with gas-borne powders, e.g. a mill, classifier, sifting rotor, cyclone or pipe has a coating of soft, elastic material having hardness 10-50 shore, the thickness of the coating being such that in use the surface of the coating continuously changes its shape under the impact of gasborne powders and thereby prevents the formation of appreciable deposits of the powders upon the coating. The coating may be a solid rubber, or a foamed rubber, applied by glueing on strips or in the case of pipes by inserting and pasting together tubular parts. The coating may be composed of two layers, ie. a thick soft layer, e.g. rubber foam. As shown in Fig. 1, in an impact mill the baffle ribbed grinding track, inlet 5, outlet 6 and inner wall 4 of the housing are protected by soft, elastic coating 7. The baffle ribbed grinding track is made of rubber and is fitted with baffle ribs glued on and pasted to the inner wall of the mill (Fig. 1, not shown). As shown in Fig. 3, in a classifying mill the inlet 5, inner wall of the mill housing 4 and the classifier housing 8, sifting channels 9 of the classifying rotor 10, fines channel 11 and channel 12 for the oversize material returning from classifier housing 8 into mill housing 4 are covered with rubber foam coating 7, and the baffle ribbed grinding track 1 is made of rubber.
