Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A contact adhesive comprises a terpene polymer, a polyethylene with a density of 0À916 grams per cubic centimetre, and a polyisobutylene having a molecular weight of about 15,000. The adhesive is used in manufacturing a steel pipe coated with a single, or multiple, layer of thermoplastic synthetic resin material, e.g. polyethylene, the layer of resin material being cemented to the steel pipe and, in the case of multiple layers, cemented to each other, with the contact adhesive. A suitable high-temperature adhesive is stated to be 20% by weight of polyethylene with a density of 0À916 gm./cu. cm., 30% by weight of a terpene polymer, 32À5% by weight of polyisobutylene with a molecular weight of about 15,000, and 17À5% by weight of low-viscosity polyethylene having a density of 0À916 gm./cu. cm. When the adhesive is applied to the pipe as a sleeve the adhesive composition may be 30-40% by weight of polyisobutylene with a molecular weight of 15,000, 10-20% by weight of polyethylene with a molecular weight of between 20,000 and 30,000, 30-35% by weight of terpene resin, and 15-20% by weight of micro-wax.
