Abstract
1,246,311. Polymers containing thiazole groups. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 3 Oct., 1968 [9 Oct., 1967], No. 46898/68. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Divisions C2 and G2] Polymers containing at least 30% by weight of thiazole groups are used as antifoggants in photographic materials (see Division G2). The following preparations of thiazole-containing polymers are illustrated:- (a) 2,4 - Diamino - 5 - phenylthiazole monohydrobromide is polycondensed with adipyl chloride in dimethylformamide to yield a polymer having repeating units of the formula (b) Copoly(ethylene-maleic anhydride) is reacted with 2-aminobenzothiazole to introduce pendent benzothiazolylaminoacyl groups. (c) Reaction (b) is repeated using poly(acrylic anhydride) as the starting polymer instead of the maleic anhydride copolymer. (d) Reactions (b) and (c) are repeated using 2-mercapto-6-aminobenzothiazole instead of the 2-aminobenzothiazole. (e) Reaction (c) is repeated using 2-aminothiazole instead of the 2-aminobenzothiazole. (f) Reaction (e) is repeated using copoly- (styrenemaleic anhydride) instead of the poly- (acrylic anhydride). (g) Reaction (b) is repeated using 2-amino-4- (4-diphenylyl)-thiazole instead of the 2-aminobenzothiazole. (h) Vinyl acetate is polymerized, then hydrolysed to polyvinyl alcohol which is treated with chloroacetic anhydride to yield polyvinyl chloroacetate, and the latter is reacted with 2- mercaptobenzothiazole to introduce pendent benzothiazolylmercapto-acetate groups. (i) Copoly(ethylene-maleic anhydride) is re. acted with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole or 2-mercapto-6-nitrobenzothiazole to introduce pendent (nitro)benzothiazplylmercapto-acyl groups. (j) Low molecular weight, 2-mercaptoethanolterminated polyphenyl acrylate is reacted with 2-aminothiazole to convert the phenyl ester groups to thiazolylaminoacyl groups. (k) Reaction (j) is repeated using 2-aminobenzothiazole instead of the 2-arninothiazole. (1) N - Vinyl - N<SP>1</SP> - benzothiazol - 2 - yl - urea is polymerized in refluxing acetone using 2,2<SP>1</SP>- azobis (2-methylpropionitrile) as catalyst.
