Abstract

1,246,306. Brazing. UGINE KUHLMANN. 14 Nov., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967], No. 54139/68. Heading B3R. Stripped or pickled components made of one or more of the metals Zr, Ti, Hf, Ta, Nb, V or their alloys are provided with a coating resistant to corrosion at high temperatures by a process comprising zinc plating a member made from an alloy based on Al-Si and brazing the member using a metal chosen from Cu, Ag, Be, Ge, Si or their alloys to a surface of the component to be protected. In coating the interior of a tube, the tubular Al-Si alloy member may be pressed against the interior surface of the tube using a mandrel whose coefficient of expansion exceeds that of the tube. Brazing may be performed at a temperature of 380‹ to 660‹ C. maintained for at least an hour under a pressure of at most 10<SP>-3</SP> torr. The Al-Si alloy member may contain one of the metals of the component. In an example, a tube of Zr-alloy containing: was coated with a tubular member of Al-Si alloy containing 1% Si, the member being first zinc plated by immersion in aqueous sodium zincate and then copper plated electrolytically in a bath based on sodium cyanide. The tubular member was placed inside the Zr-alloy tube and an oversize knob forced through the member, following which a core of austenitic steel was placed inside the member and the assembly heated for one hour at 615‹ C. under vacuum. The joint is stated to comprise a diffusion region in which a layer of an intermetallic Al-Si-Zr compound is formed. On another example the core was of alumina-aluminium.
