Abstract

1,246,245. Waterproof cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 26 Feb., 1970, No. 9272/70. Addition to 1,165,528. Heading H1A. To waterproof individual cores 1 of a multicore cable and to prevent axial flow of water when an outer waterproof sheath is damaged, a laminate 2 comprising plastics 3 and paper 4 innermost is longitudinally wrapped round each core and the intercies between the strands and the outer sheath filled with an insulating, water-impervious, non-hardening jelly-like substance, e.g. petroleum jelly. The plastics layer 3 is one which is impervious to this jelly e.g. polypropylene, and is bent over at 5 and sealed using heat or adhesive to form a plastics-toplastics seal to prevent the jelly from passing into the paper layer. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the laminate is twice as wide and is folded in half (at 15) to give a double thickness insulating layer (12).
