Abstract
1,246,212. Accelerometers; detecting movements photo-electrically. VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT METROLOGII IM, D. I. MENDELEEVA. March 25, 1969, No.15521/69. Headings G1A and G1K. Accelerations of a mass are measured by locating on the mass the moving mirror of a Michelson interferometer. The mass 1, accelerated upwards by discharge of capacitors 11 through a moving coil 12, is decelerated rapidly by an impact block 3. Light from a laser 7 is reflected from mirrors 6 and 9 and the interfering reflected light is detected by a photo-multiplier 10. The speed of the mass is determined from the frequency of the interference beats from photo-multiplier 10 and the speed is differential to determine the acceleration of the mass. The mass 1 may carry an accelerometer 2 under calibration. For accelerations up to 200g, the moving coil 12 suffices, and the impact block is not used. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the mass is held at a predetermined height by an electro-magnetic latch and then allowed to fall on to a stationary impact block or an electromagnetic exciter moving against the mass.
