A process for regulating the growth of plants and/or modifying the habit thereof, in particular for reducing stalk length of wheat, comprises treating the plants, seed or soil with a sulphonium compound of formula (CH 3 ) 2 S<SP>#</SP>R<SP>1</SP>X<SP>#</SP>, wherein R<SP>1</SP> is C 3 to C 6 alkyl or and X is an anion. Suitable compounds, which may be applied in admixture with conventional adjuvants, are dimethylisopropyl- and dimethyl see-butyl-sulphonium bromides.
