Yarn 112 passing to a winding station is engaged by fingers 14 biassed by a spring 160 and by an arm 110 'biassed by a pivoted weight 114. In the event of yarn breakage fingers 14 and arm 110 are displaced and an automatic knotting operation performed. If the operation has been incorrectly performed and the yarn is not in the position shown, the apparatus of Fig. 1 prevents repeated knotting operations thus indicative to an operative than the station requires attention. As shown on yarn breakage fingers 14 and arm 110 are displaced. The displacement of arm 110 causes, with a time delay, a cam 4 to be driven, thus pivotting a lever 1 biassed thereagainst. The opposite end of lever I is moved clear of a member 7 pivoted on a lever 9 so as not to restrain lever 9 from rotating anticlockwise under the influence of a biassing spring. If the knotting operation has been successfully performed and the yarn is once again in the position shown in Fig. 1 an abutment 12 associated with fingers 14 engages the end 11 of lever 9 and prevents it being rotated and the winding operation then proceeds. If the knotting has not been correctly carried out and the yarn is not in the position shown abutment 12 is displaced from the position shown and lever 9 rotates anticlockwise. This prevents knotting being repeated and requires an operative to investigate the reason why the knotting mechanism is functioning incorrectly. On repairing the knotting mechanism the operative manually resets the checking mechanism.
