Abstract

1,245,370. Lap forming device. CROMPTON & KNOWLES CORP. 29 Sept., 1969 [23 Oct., 1968], No. 47717/69. Heading DIN. [Also in Division G3] Textile fibres are withdrawn from an enclosure by rolls to form a lap and the average density of the fibres in the enclosure automatically controls the drive of means stuffing fibres into the enclosure so as to maintain density in the enclosure constant. In Fig. 2, textile fibres supplied by an elevator conveyor (not shown) are deposited into a chute 34 which is kept full with overspill returned to the conveyor through chute 35. Stuffing rolls 40 press the fibres from chute 34 into an enclosure 46, having a vibrating wall 38, from which a lap is withdrawn by rolls 48 and 18 for transmission to a carding machine and can coiler (not shown). Light from one or a number of lamps 60 passes through transparent or translucent dustproof housings, and the fibres in enclosure 46, to a number of photocells 54 arranged across the width of the enclosure so that an electrical signal representative of the average density is obtainable to control the speed of an electric motor (not shown) driving rolls 40 and thus maintain density constant. The control of speed is effected. by comparing the amplified photocell output with a reference voltage so that any difference adjusts the firing point of a silicon controlled rectifier in the motor armature circuit. Upon operation of a switch (not shown) to render automatic control ineffective, motor speed may be controlled manually through the SCR firing circuit which is supplied with feedback in dependence on motor speed.
