Abstract

1,245,139. Phthalocyanine compounds. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORP. 30 Dec., 1968 [28 Dec., 1967], No. 61752/68. Heading C4P. [Also in Divisions G2-G3] Phthalocyanine dyes for use as photographic developing agents contain at least one substituent comprising a phenyl radical substituted by two OH, two amino, or an OH and an amino group, said groups being ortho or para to one another, the radical optionally being further substituted. The phenyl radical may be bonded to the phthalocyanine nucleus either directly or via a linking group (e.g. a sulphonamidoalkylene, -NHCO-, aminoalkylamino, alkylenethio, aminoalkylene, aminophenylene, acyl, aminophenoxy or alkylene group). The dyes may be prepared by either (1) reacting a substituted phthalic acid, urea and a metal chloride, if necessary modifying the substituent to render it reactive, and reacting the product with a phenyl compound, or (2) chlorosulphonating, acylating or chloromethylating an unsubstituted phthalocyanine, and reacting the product with a phenyl compound. The examples describe the preparation of (1) copper phthalocyanine 4,4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11</SP>,4<SP>111</SP> - tetra - (hydroquinonyl isopropyl 2 - methylamino sulphonamide) by heating 4 - sulphophthalic acid, CuCl 2 , urea, H 3 B0 3 and NH 4 molybdate, and reacting the product with successively ClSO 3 H, PCl 5 , SO 2 Cl 2 , 1 - (2<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP> - dimethoxyphenyl) - 2 - methylaminopropane, and BBr 3 ; and (2) copper phthalocyanine 3,3<SP>1</SP>,3<SP>11</SP>,3<SP>111</SP> - tetra - (hydroquinoyl iso - propylamino sulphonamide) by reacting Cu phthalocyanine with ClSO 3 H and PCl 5 to form the tetrasulphonyl chloride, condensing this with 1 - (2<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP> - dimethoxyphenyl) - 2 - aminopropane, and treating the product with BBr 3 .
