Abstract

1,257,581. Azo dyes. SANDOZ Ltd. 28 Jan., 1970 [19 Feb., 1969; 22 Aug., 1969], No. 4188/70. Heading C4P. The invention comprises azo dyes and their metal complex compounds which in the metalfree form correspond to the formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl radical; R 2 is hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl or aryl radical; R 3 is hydrogen, sulphonic acid or optionally substituted alkyl; R 4 is hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl or aryl; D is the radical of a diazo component and n is 1 or 2. Preferred dyes have the formulµ wherein the rings A and/or B bear a sulphonic acid group. The dyes may be prepared by coupling n moles of a diazo component of an amine D-NH 2 with 1 mole of a coupling component of formula and treating the resulting azo compound with a metal-yielding agent. Alternatively, a metal complex compound of the coupling component II may be compound with the diazo compound of an amine D-NH 2 . Suitable metals are Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Mn or Ni. The dyes give yellowishbrown shades on animal or synthetic fibres, and particularly on leather.
