[Also in Division C6] Fermentations are conducted in annular trays 20, Figs. 1 and 3, eccentrically mounted within a jacketed cylindrical vessel 1, which vessel is rotatable about a vertical axis 4 through an electric motor 18 and gearing 16, and is rotatable also about horizontal axis 9, 10 by an electric motor 13 or handle 14. Filling of the trays with fluid culture medium, applying micro-organism culture to the surface of the solidified culture medium in the trays and washing off the cultured microorganisms are accomplished by rotational movement of the container see Figs. 6-9, not shown. Thus, the container is brought into the horizontal position, is rotated to bring the gap 58 due to the eccentrical mounting of the trays uppermost, and the container is then brought to the vertical position in which the trays are upright. The culture surface of each tray is attended by scrapers 24 with corrugated operational surfaces. The scrapers are flexibly mounted from arms 23, the arms being fitted to shaft 21 by joints which are freely displaceable along the shaft axis. Rotation of wheel 26 in one direction imparts a rotational movement to fork 31 and nut 30. This causes screw 33, pin 34 and shaft 21 to move downwards until projections 35 disengage spring-held pins 37 from movable washer 36. At this point the scrapers have descended into an operational position above the trays and further rotation of the wheel causes rotation of the shaft and arms. Rotation of the wheel in the opposite direction first stops the rotation of the shaft and arms and then causes them to rise into the inoperative position.
