Abstract

1,245,011. Methyl vinyl ether/maleic acid copolymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 May, 1969 [28 June, 1968], No. 30988/68. Heading C3P. A solid copolymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic acid is made by blending a watersoluble or -swellable methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer with 10-33% by wt. of water and maintaining the blend at an elevated temperature for a period sufficient to effect hydrolysis of at least some of the anhydride groups. The copolymer may be crosslinked with an epoxy compound, e.g. copolymerized glycidyl methacrylate, or a compound containing a plurality of -OH, -SH or -NH groups, e.g. polyethylene glycol, or copolymerized hydroxyethyl methacrylate, simultaneously with hydrolysis of the anhydride groups; and some of the anhydride groups may be reacted with an amine or alcohol, e.g. methanol. The copolymer may be blended with substituted hydroxy-benzoquinones or -benzoates, ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid, 8- hydroxyquinoline or pentachlorophenyl laurate.
