Abstract

1495255 Polycarboxylate cements NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 28 Jan 1975 [18 Dec 1973] 58490/73 Heading C3P Polycarboxylate cement packs comprise (a) a poly-(carboxylic acid anhydride) which is a homopolymer or a copolymer containing a major mole percentage of anhydride residues, and (b) an ion-leachable powder, e.g. a metal oxide or aluminosilicate glass, which reacts with (a) in the presence of water to give a plastic mass which rapidly hardens. Component (a) is suitably a homo- or co-polymer of maleic anhydride, and may be used either as a dry powder or in solution, e.g. in dimethyl formamide. In examples, (a) is a copolymer of maleic anhydride with ethylene, styrene or vinyl methyl ether, and (b) is zinc oxide, cupric oxide, mercuric oxide, lead oxide, cadmium oxide, silver oxide or a fluoroaluminosilicate glass powder.
