Abstract

1,244,860. Fibrillated laminated plastics films. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 3 Dec., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 57365/68. Heading B5B. A fibrillated plastics film laminate comprises three or more layers of plastics film bonded together and fibrillated, at least two of such layers being molecularly oriented and composed of plastics material having different properties, the direction of orientation of the molecularly oriented layers being the same. The fibrillated laminated film may be made by bonding together three or more layers of plastics film at least two of said layers having different properties, and at least two of said layers being molecularly oriented, to form a fibrillatable laminate in which the direction of orientation of the oriented layers is the same, and fibrillating the laminate. At least two layers of the laminate may differ in their heat shrinkage characteristics and the fibrillation step may be followed by a heating step to induce crimping. At least two films of the laminate may be molecularly oriented to a different degree before lamination. The laminate may be fibrillated by stretching the laminate in the direction of orientation of the two films to achieve a high degree of uniaxial orientation. The laminate composed of three layers may comprise a layer of polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinyl acetate. The laminate may comprise a layer of polypropylene bonded between two layers of polyvinyl acetate. The laminates or the individual fibres comprising the laminates may be oriented by cold drawing or by drawing at an elevated temperature below the melting point of the lowestmelting polymer. The draw ratio is usually in the range of 4:1 to 16:1 but higher draw ratios may be used. The laminate may be fibrillated by any of the known methods, including slitting it longitudinally into narrow strips and stretching the strips at a high stretch ratio.
