Abstract

In a variable speed hydraulic motor comprising a rotary cylinder block 2, in which axially movable pistons 26 are reciprocated in cylinders 28 by the action of a stationary swash-plate 32, each of the cylinders 28 communicates with a radial cylinder in which a radial piston 56 is reciprocated by an eccentric, and the displacement of the motor is varied by altering either the degree of eccentricity, or the inclination of the swash-plate. Each radial piston 56 is pivoted on a slipper 60, formed by ring parts 64, 66, the slipper being adjacent a rotating inner race (68) Fig.2 (not shown), which is separated from a stationary outer race (70) by rollers (72). The outer race is housed in a cam member (74) which is octagonal shaped externally, and which acts as a guide to ensure that the races move in only one direction. At maximum speed the cam member is set at zero eccentricity by locating spindles 78, so that the motor displacement is provided solely by the axial pistons; to reduce the displacement the member is moved so that each radial piston moves radially outward as its corresponding axial piston moves axially outward. The cam member 74 may be adjusted by hydraulic means, such as hydraulic pistons (80), and the circuit controlling these pistons may include means for over-riding the control signal if the motor fails to start at a high speed setting. The bearing surfaces of the slippers 60 may be arranged as hydrostatic bearings, in which case the slippers may bear directly on the inner surface of the cam member 74. Hydraulic fluid is introduced into and discharged from the cylinders 28 via inlet and outlet ports 44, channels 46, a stationary valve plate 42, and arcuate ports 52 and 54 in the valve plate.
