Abstract

1,244,773. Asphalts. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 2 June, 1969 [27 June, 1968], No. 27738/69. Heading C5E. The softening point and penetration characteristics of asphalt are improved by subjecting a petroleum residuum to a shearing stress of not less than 4000 reciprocal seconds. The process is carried out a temperature in the range 300‹ to 600‹ F., optionally in the presence of air or a nitrogen oxide or nitrogen, or mixtures thereof, and for a time of e.g. 15 to 30 minutes. The process is preferably performed by forcing the residuum through a restricted opening, e.g. in a suitable mixing or homogenizing apparatus.
