Abstract

1,244,630. Regulating I. C. engines. LUMENITION Ltd. Nov. 4, 1969 [Nov.12, 1968], No. 53580/68. Heading F1B. [Also in Division G1] A device for fast switching the fuel injection solenoid of an I. C. engine comprises an arrangement having a source of infrared radiation, an infrared sensitive element, and an opaque element with at least one aperture and connected to be moved in time relation to the rotation of the engine whereby solenoid operating pulses are developed by the passage of the aperture; a transistor amplifier connected to the sensitive element; and a switching arrangement which introduces a desired quantity of fuel into a cylinder in accordance with the duration of the pulse. Cup shaped member 22, Fig.2, is mounted on shaft 26 to rotate in an annular groove between lamps 46 which may be gallium arsenide, and sensitive elements 48. The slot aperture 28 in the cup shaped member may vary with width along its length and may be movable longitudinally by the engine governor to give a desired fuel-to-air ratio, and the difference between manifold pressure and ambient may be applied to a diaphragm 34 to move the lamp support 24. The detectors may be silicon planar diodes or photo-Darlington amplifiers and their outputs are applied to the fuel injection solenoids through transistor amplifiers including power transistors, feedback arrangements, and means for reducing transients fed back from the solenoid operating coils on switching. Multi-injector systems having separate switching circuits for each injector and having separate sources and detectors for generating the respective pulses are described.
