Abstract
1,244,307. Glow discharge lamps. MULLARD Ltd. 30 Dec., 1969, No. 63248/69. Heading H1D A recess 9 completely surrounding the open end of each cavity 7 and extending to the open end of each other cavity 7 is provided in the face of a block 6 of electrically insulating material forming part of a glow-discharge display device described in Specification 1,244,306 to prevent material sputtered from the cathodes 1 forming short circuits between the cavities. Cathodes 1 and leads 2 formed by photo-etching a sheet of Ni-Fe, Cr-Fe or Ni-Co-Fe are moulded into the block 6 in a mould which includes posts and grooves to form the cavities 7 and surrounding ridges 8 and recess 9. The posts and grooves may be formed by a rotary cutter (Fig. 1, not shown). An anode (not shown), made by photo-etching or expanding a metal plate to form a mesh, is welded to a frame 4 moulded in the block 6 which has a peripheral face 16 to which a window is sealed. After the moulding a peripheral strip 3 connecting and supporting the leads 2 is removed and the device is evacuated and filled with Ne or a Ne-A mixture at a pressure of 50-200 torr. through a tubulation communicating with an opening in the face of the block 6. In an alternative embodiment the cathodes in a row or column are connected together and anodes formed by conductive strips of tin oxide are deposited on the inner surface of the window to provide a cross-bar addressing system.
