Abstract

1,243,962. Rocket launchers. AVIATION SUPPLY, MINISTER OF. 1 July, 1958 [29 July, 1957], No. 24025/57. Heading F3C. In a rocket launcher in which the rocket is supported and guided by two rails, slight longitudinal curvature of the rocket body tends to cause oscillation of the rocket relative to the rails when the convex side of the rocket and the rails are in contact. The oscillations, although of small amplitude may have an angular velocity sufficient to produce large deviations in flight after launching. To eliminate the oscillatory movement on the launching rails, the latter are given a slight upward concave shape such that the rocket, at any position along their length, will make contact with each rail at two points. The concave bearing edges are produced, either by mounting the rails on supports, the heights of which decrease with distance from the ends of the rails or by maintaining the rails straight and chamfering the inner supporting edges, the chamfer being deeper at the centre than at the ends of the rail.
