Abstract
1374415 Stabilizing ships TRADE & INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 3 Nov 1971 [4 Aug 1970] 37528/70 Heading B7M A passive roll stabilizer system for a floating vessel 1 comprises a guideway 4 defining a sagging arcuate track in a plane parallel to that in which the vessel rolls and a mobile body is supported by the guideway so as to undergo when the vessel rolls oscillatory motion to and fro along the guideway and simultaneous rotation about horizontal axis X-X. The mobile body comprises at least one body 2 which has at least one rolling surface of circular cross-section, the radius of the rollingsur face being no greater than the radius of gyration of the complete body about its rolling axis so that the rotational energy of the mobile body is greater than half its translational energy. The track of the guideway is curved to a greater extent than the path of a pendulum having a naural resonant period equal to that of the rolling vessel and lead shot 8 in the mobile body damps its movement.
