Abstract

1,243,632. Safety means. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 21 Oct., 1968 [20 Oct., 1967], No. 47962/67. Heading A3V. A safety device for an elevated walkway includes a cable 12 anchored so as to extend longitudinally between the two ends of the walkway, with attached or integral eye members 16 held captive on stanchions 30 which are fixed, for example bolted or welded, to the walkway and adapted to cooperate with the eye members 16 to support a load carried by the cable 12 between adjacent eye members, and a safety harness clip 40, round the cable 12 which may be moved into a slit 24 round the stanchion 30 and out through the slit 24 again thus permitting the wearer to move along the length of the cable. The cable which may be a wire rope is fixed above and parallel to the walkway by means of a stretching screw (14) Fig. 1 (not shown) at the end of the jib (10) of a crane with sufficient tension to prevent sag. The eye members 16 are each in the form of a plate 18 welded to a tube 20 through which the wire rope extends clamped at the side by bulldog clips 26. The stanchions 30 are fitted to the structural components of the jib (10) at intervals of about 15 feet and each comprises a cylindrical stub 32, of a width slightly greater than that of the slit 24 of the eye member 16 with an end disc 34. Horizontal grooves 36 in the stub slightly wider than the thickness of the plate of the eye member enable the latter to be fitted on the stanchion and bolted. Harness clip 40 Fig. 4 is a closed metal loop arranged to lie in one plane and bent to form a space 42 with a longtitudinally extending portion 44 and the shorter portion 46 perpendicular to it. In a modification the cable may be formed from eye members connected by lengths of rope. In a further modification the eye members may be clamped by bolts directly to the wire rope.
