Abstract

1,243,563. Olefin - olefin dimer copolymerization catalyst. CHISSO CORP. 30 May, 1969 [7 June, 1968], No. 27498/69. Heading C3P. Alpha-olefins are copolymerized with their dimers formed in situ by contact with a catalyst comprising (a) an organometallic compound of Groups II or III, (b) a halide of a transition metal of Groups IV or V, and (c) a salt or acetyacetonate of Co, Ni, Rh, Pd or Ir, or a complex thereof with a phosphine. Optionally amines or ethers may also be included in the catalyst. In examples, ethylene is copolymerized with butene-1, propylene with 4-methyl-pentene-1, and ethylene and isobutene are reacted whereby ethylene is copolymerized with 3,3-dimethylbutene-1 and 1-butene, in the presence of (a) Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl or Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 , (b) CoCl 2 , NiCl 2 , RhCl 3 .3H 2 O, NiCl 2 .2.P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 , nickel diacetylacetonate, and [CH 3 (CH 2 ) 16 COO] 2 Ni, (c) TiCl 3 , 3TiCl 3 .AlCl 3 , and VCl 3 , and optionally the dimethylether of diethylene glycol.
