Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A web 9 is coated with a thermoplastic from a nozzle 6 and a second web 37 is bonded thereto during passage through the nip between a pressure roll 7<SP>11</SP> and a cooling roll 8<SP>1</SP>, the pressure roll bearing 16<SP>11</SP> being pivotally mounted on a support member 14<SP>11</SP> about an axis lying on a plane through said nip and tangential to said rolls and the support member being pivotal about the cooling roll axis 13. A second roll 7<SP>1</SP>, acting as a lift-off guide roll, is similarly mounted on a second support member 141 pivoted independently of the first such member about the axis 13. The resulting laminate partially wraps the cooling roll and passes over said lift off roll 7<SP>1</SP>. Support members 14<SP>1</SP> and 14<SP>11</SP> each carry a tentering roll, a guide roll and an electronic treatment device 26<SP>1</SP> and 26<SP>11</SP> upstream of the nip, said device comprising high tension, rotating spark electrodes. The positions of rolls 7<SP>11</SP> and 7<SP>1</SP>, which may have rubber surfaces, are controlled by hydraulic servomotors 19<SP>11</SP> and 19<SP>1</SP> and those of support members 14<SP>11</SP> and 14<SP>1</SP> by endless chains mounted in guide rolls (39 and 40, and 41 and 42, Fig. 4) and may be adjusted so that either roll 7<SP>11</SP> or 7<SP>1</SP> serves as the pressure roll and the other as the lift off roll. The position of the nozzle 6 is horizontally adjustable.
