Abstract

1,243,066. Suction dredgers. INGENIEURSBUREAU VOOR SYSTEMEN EN OCTROOIEN SPANSTAAL N.V. 9 Oct., 1968 [16 Oct., 1967], No. 47921/68. Heading E1F. A suction dredger installation is such that, when discharge from the installation is stopped, the suction pipe is, during the stoppage, left in the spoil being sucked up as its construction facilitates the recreation of a suspension of spoil at the intake of the pipe when the installation is restarted. This functioning of the installation is due to the pipe having an intake portion that can be moved axially of and, if necessary, can be withdrawn into the lower portion of the rest of the pipe. This movement of the intake portion causes in the spoil the creation of a cavity in which a suspension of spoil can be created. Preferably during interruption of the suction process, water under pressure is supplied to the lower end of the suction pipe as the suction of the suction pump of the installation is gradually eliminated at the lower end of the pipe. This supply of water prevents spoil entering and choking the lower end of the pipe.
