Abstract

1,242,910. Railway mules; rail/road vehicles. WHITING CORP. 24 Dec., 1968, No. 6048/71. Divided out of 1,242,909. Headings B7D and B7H. A railway mule comprises steerable road wheels 86, a further single road wheel 88, and rail wheels 96, 97 on two axles, the axles being movable up and down for movement of the rail wheels between the full positions shown and the phantom positions by means of hydraulic rams 122, the mule also consisting of a coupler 49 for coupling and lifting engagement with a coupler 53 on a railway car 46 by which a portion of the railway car weight is borne by the mule when the rail wheels are in their lowest positions, and there being provided a prime mover 92 adapted to drive the road wheel 88 and also the rail wheel axles by chains 128, 130 from an extension of the axle of road wheel 88. The rail wheel axles are mounted on the mule by arms 100, 101 about a pivot 99 coaxial with the axle of road wheel 88, and these arms are linked with ram 122 by levers 112, 116, 107.
