Abstract
1,242,713. Carburizing and heat-treating gears. DAVID BROWN GEAR INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 20, 1969 [May 21, 1968], No.24103/68. Headings C7A and C7U. [Also in Division B3] A case-hardened toothed gear is made by forming a gear with a small surplus of metal on its tooth flanks from a steel containing one or more non- carbide forming elements such that it is rendered freeze-hardenable when its carbon content is increased above a level dependent upon the quantity of non-carbide forming elements present. The gear is then carburized, preferably gas-carburized at 925‹ C., to form a carbon gradient such that there is formed on cooling to room temperature, preferably at a rate of 1-20‹C. per second at 700‹C., an outer soft austenitic layer underlaid by a harder layer containing some austerite surrounding a soft core, the soft outer layer being thicker than the surplus metal. Finally the gear is cooled to room temperature, the surplus metal is removed and the gear freeze-hardened, preferably in CO 2 slush at -60 to -80‹C., to form a martensitic layer in the case. The gear is preferably tempered at 150 to 250‹C. after the freeze-hardening. The steel used preferably contains up to 0À21%, e.g. 0À1%, carbon and 5% to 10% nickel and a gear blank may be doublenormalized and tempered before forming the gear.
