Abstract

1,242,662. Compressed expanded graphite; and bodies thereof. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 8 Jan., 1969, No. 1237/69. Heading C1A. Expanded graphite particles are compressed to produce flakes of graphite, irregular in form and having a density of 0À25 to 1.5 gm./cc. A random mass of such particles may be assembled and such mass further compressed into a coherent graphite article have a density of 10 to 2À1 gm./cc. Preferably the original expanded particles are compressed by passing the particles between rollers, and such compressed particles may be subjected either uniaxially or multiaxially to a pressure of at least 300 p.s.i. (21 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>) preferably 300-5000 p.s.i. (21-350 kg.(cm.<SP>2</SP>). A binding agent may be used when compressing the graphite flakes. The bonding agent is preferably in the form of a fine powder (0À044-0À149 mm.) being used in an amount of from 2-55% by weight. Numerous organic and inorganic bonding agents are exemplified and belong to three groups: solid organic polymers, organic compounds yielding a char upon pyrolysis, and inorganic glass forming materials. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,049,588.
