124,261. Incorporated Soldiers' & Sailors' Help Society, and Ouzman, C. March 18, 1918. Picks and pickaxes.-An appliance whereby a person having one arm missing, paralysed, or deformed may be enabled to use spades, forks, weighted rakes, or like gardening or entrenching tools, consists of a loop, yoke, sling or harness carried by or secured on the user's body and connected to the tool or article by a flexible member and a clip or clamp formed or fitted with front and side eyes or rings. Fig. 1 shows a closed leather shoulder strap or loop a connected by a chain b and spring hooks e, f to the front ring or eye g<1> of the clip h<1> which is permanently or detachably secured on the lower end of the handle d of a spade c. In a modification, the closed loop a is replaced by an open loop having hooks or chains &c. at both ends fastened to the side eyes i of the clip. The appliances may be made of leather, cord, wire, &c. A shaped wooden yoke may be provided for the shoulders. The tool is supported by the sling and is manipulated by the sound hand of the user, assisted by movements of the body. To facilitate turning of the spade, the flexible member b may be connected to one of the side eyes i of the clip.
