1,242,491. Harvesters; planting and treating crops. L. A. DINGEMANS. 11 March, 1970 [14 March, 1969], No. 13636/69. Headings AID and A1F. [Also in Divisions B7 and B8] A vehicle for harvesting herbs and vegetables, particularly lettuces, or planting or treating crops has a chassis 10 mounted on wheels 13, 24, a motor coupled to drive one or more of the wheels, a steering tiller 31 with a toothed quadrant 32 which controls the rear wheels 24, a low seat 35 in front of wheels 13, a foot rest 11 and an endless conveyer 39 extending rearwardly and preferably adjustable across the width of the chassis. Lettuces are picked up by seated operators, placed in the conveyor 39, except, perhaps, in winter when they are placed in plastic envelopes which are stacked with their flaps held down by spring-loaded chutes 52 and the top envelope is inflated by blowers 50. Lettuces arriving at the top of conveyer 39 are packed in boxes 55 by an operator standing on a duckwalk situated forwardly of the rear wheels. Empty boxes are stacked on frame 56. The conveyor is driven by motor 46 powered by battery 48 which is charged by a dynamo. Driven in reverse the vehicle may be used for planting young plants by persons seated on seat 35 the plants being carried in boxes 38.
